Prayers are personal communication between you and God. At first, you might not know what to say or how to say it. Simple morning prayers are a good way to start your journey and relationship with the divine. Prayers don’t have to be complicated. Speak from your heart and the depths of your soul. Whether you’re a new believer or have believed in God all your life, a simple morning prayer is a good way to greet a new day, to reaffirm your relationship with God, and to reap the benefits of your faith.
Simple Morning Prayers for Beginners
If you’re not used to praying, or you don’t know where to start or how to say what’s on your mind, start with a morning prayer. Prayers don’t have to be long or perfectly worded. They come from the heart. A morning prayer can be a simple one, giving thanks to God for another day and another chance to live a faithful life. Your morning prayers can be about thanksgiving or in appreciation for God’s creation. Morning prayers can be used to praise God and His son Jesus Christ. A prayer first thing in the morning can also be one that asks for strength to get through the challenges that might face you on any particular day.
A simple good morning prayer can offer thanks for one’s health, shelter, food, and many other blessings that have been bestowed upon you or your family. Prayers don’t have to be elegant. Whether your prayers are spoken out loud or with your thoughts, you can trust that God will hear you. With every new day, consider something that is important to you but that also might sometimes be beyond your own ability to control. Simple morning prayers might look like this:
- Lord, thank You for my health, both physically, emotionally, and mentally. I know I sometimes take such blessings for granted. Thank You for the healthy days You have granted me with and give me the strength to treat my body better. In Your name I ask, Amen.
- Heavenly Father, thank You for the shelter You have given me, protecting me and my family. Thank You for the clothing that keeps me warm and dry. Help me to be worthy and grateful for the grace You have shown me. You are the source of all my blessings on this earth. In Jesus’s name I pray, Amen.
- Lord, thank You for watching over me during the night and allowing me to be witness to another morning. Please protect me from harm this day and help me to only do things that are right and pleasing to You. I rely on Your guidance and wisdom to support me through any challenges that come my way today. I ask this in the name of Jesus, Amen.
Your Good Morning Prayer
While your good morning prayer can be simple, short and to the point, it must also be respectful and earnest. Open that connection to God or His son Jesus Christ and let your heart speak the truth, whether you’re offering gratitude or for support in some way. In the book of Matthew (Chapter 6:6), Jesus talks about prayer. What does He say? “That you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”
Yet Jesus also goes on to say, “But when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Therefore, do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask him.”
Always remember that simple morning prayers don’t have to be of a certain length. Anyone can speak to God in prayer. Some people use this time, first thing in the morning, to pray for strength, compassion, generosity of spirit, determination, or anything they may need on a particularly difficult day. Prayers for strength and faith are common to new believers, as is guidance and prayers for wisdom, empathy, and compassion.
Jesus himself taught us how to pray, in what we now call The Lord’s Prayer. Starting your morning with this prayer, with diligent focus on the words themselves, is a good way to start any day:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
Amen.
In this single prayer, Jesus has provided guidance for our prayers; to honor God, to ask for sustenance, to forgive our sins, to help us face temptations, and to keep us from doing evil.
Make Your Simple Morning Prayers an Important Start to Your Day
When you pray, you are fostering a relationship with your Heavenly Father, and His son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. When you take your prayers seriously and pray with sincerity, your prayers will be heard. We are dependent upon God’s good graces for everything from our health to our spirituality, and our ability to face and persevere in even the most difficult times.
Some people are nervous when they first began to pray, afraid that they might say the wrong thing or not say something correctly. However, always remember that your prayers are the best way to commune with your Lord and Savior. Simple morning prayers for those new to praying or even those who have been praying all their lives, will help build a comforting, peaceful and unique relationship with God that nourishes the spirit and soul. Praying to God can support you through both good and difficult times as long as they are spoken with truth and in an open spirit of faith.
